In health care, maintaining high standards of care is essential to protect the public. In Singapore, keeping clinical skills current is becoming a formal condition of a nurse's practising certificate, while for nursing-aide and healthcare-assistant roles a valid first-aid and CPR certificate is a credential employers require. Here is what the rules expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

Health professionals: continuing education and up-to-date skills

Nurses in Singapore are accountable to the Singapore Nursing Board (SNB) for keeping their professional competence current. The SNB is phasing in mandatory Continuing Professional Education (CPE) for practising-certificate renewal, with registered nurses accumulating CPE points over a two-year qualifying period and being expected to maintain the clinical competence that includes emergency response.

A pre-mandatory phase began on 1 September 2024, with CPE becoming a mandatory condition for the 2028 practising-certificate renewal; advanced practice nurses already require 30 points per qualifying period. Maintaining resuscitation competence is part of the standard expected of a nurse, and recertifying in basic life support is a recognised, documentable way of demonstrating it.

CPE is being made mandatory: registered nurses target 15 CPE points and enrolled nurses and midwives 10 over a two-year qualifying period, becoming a condition of the 2028 practising-certificate renewal. A full BCLS and AED certification course is explicitly awarded 4 CPE points, so basic life support and CPR training counts directly.

The requirement is met by any recognized continuing-education activity on an eligible topic. CPR/AED, ACLS (advanced cardiovascular life support) and PALS are among the eligible activities; other topics also qualify (for example safe prescribing, suicide prevention or violence prevention). A single course therefore both meets the obligation and counts toward your hours — provided you keep the proof.

How training becomes recognized

Not all activities are equal. For continuing education to be recognized by a professional order, it must meet specific criteria:

  • the instructor’s competence;
  • the relevance and quality of the content;
  • the training framework;
  • the quality of the material provided;
  • mechanisms to monitor and assess participation.

In Singapore, the SNB sets the CPE framework and the number of points a learning activity is awarded, and clinical resuscitation courses are accredited by the Singapore Resuscitation and First Aid Council (SRFAC). Our training is designed to meet these criteria.

Support and care staff: a certificate required to work

For support staff, first aid and CPR are built into the pathway and required at the point of work. The WSQ Certificate in Healthcare embeds a first-aid and CPR unit, and community-care programmes include an SRFAC-accredited CPR and AED module; some healthcare-assistant positions require a valid Basic First Aid and CPR certificate in addition to the qualification. A recognized standalone certificate meets that requirement and must be kept current.
